What is Auracast?

Auracast is a Bluetooth-based technology that allows one audio source to broadcast sound to many nearby devices at the same time.

Unlike traditional Bluetooth, which connects one device to another, Auracast enables multiple people to listen to the same audio stream simultaneously using their own compatible headphones, earbuds, or hearing aids. Users can easily find and join available audio broadcasts, similar to connecting to a public Wi-Fi network.

How does it work?

An Auracast broadcast exists outof 3 components:

A Transmitter. This is the device sending out the audio broadcast. This can be an audio system, your smartphone, a TV, or even large public address system.

An Assistant. This is the device you use to find and select a broadcast. This is generally a smartphone, or a special app.

A Receiver. This is the device that plays the sound, such as headphones, earbuds or hearing aids.

The transmitter sends out a signal, which includes the audio and audio details like the broadcast name, content, etc (the additional data is called Advertisement). You can select the broadcast you want to hear via the assistant and then listen to it via your receiver.

What can you do with Auracast?

Auracast can for instance enable you to:

  • Share your audio. Invite others to listen to your music or create your own (silent) disco party.

  • Join existing broadcasts. Listen to music, television, or announcements in public spaces, like gyms, theaters and airports.

  • Hear better. Create or join audio broadcasts for instance during presentations or in theaters, so you will be able to more clearly hear what is being said.
